Castles, dungeons, ghosts and tunnels give Scotland’s capital an air of mystique, but there’s more to Edinburgh than history and creepy tales.

Edinburgh traditionally comes alive in August for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe when art, comedy, music, dance and book festivals are held.

With 12 major festivals throughout the year, from the world-famous Hogmanay street-party to bring in the New Year in style, to the Jazz and Blues Festival which attracts famous and upcoming musicians alike to Scotland’s East Coast

Most spectacular of all is the Edinburgh Tattoo, which shows off the city’s famous castle at its best.

The historic fortress is worth a visit all on its own. Regarded as one of the United Kingdom’s best attractions, the castle sits at the top of the Old Town and dominates the skyline. Mons Meg, the famous cannon, sits atop the castle and is one of its most popular attractions, as it was once one of the world’s most powerful weapons

As well as its stunning architecture and history, Edinburgh Castle is reported to be haunted by a number of ghosts. For a truly haunting trip, visitors can sample a bone-chilling experience by going on one of the many haunted walking tours offered around the city. This allows you to explore the secrets of the underground city, explore the haunted graveyard – and even visit its famous dungeons.

And no trip to Scotland’s capital would be complete without a trip to Holyrood to see the Scottish Parliament building, which regularly houses exhibitions and cultural events.
