Glasgow Central is closed: major disruption expected until at least the end of the day on Tuesday 10 March

A fire at a building near to Glasgow Central station means the decision has been taken to close the station until further notice.

  • No trains will run to / from the high level platforms
  • Trains that run through the low level platforms are able to run but will not call at Glasgow Central. You should use Argyle Street, a short distance away to use these services

We have no estimate on when the station will reopen. We expect disruption to continue on routes to / from / through Glasgow Central until at least the end of the day on Tuesday 10 March.

Avanti West Coast customer advice:

No trains will run to / from Glasgow Central today or tomorrow, Tuesday 10 March.

An amended train service will run to Motherwell, Carlisle and Preston allowing customers to connect with trains to Edinburgh and local services to the Glasgow area. Customers are strongly encouraged to check before they travel.

You can use your ticket on the following train companies at no extra cost:

  • CrossCountry between Edinburgh and Birmingham
  • LNER services between Edinburgh and London Kings Cross
  • ScotRail between Glasgow Queen Street and Edinburgh, and also between Argyle Street and Motherwell
  • TransPennine Express services from Edinburgh to Preston

Avanti West Coast tickets dated for travel on the Anglo-Scot route between Sunday 8 March and Thursday 12 March may be used on any Avanti West Coast service until the end of Thursday 12 March.

If your train is cancelled, your ticket is valid on one of the two Avanti West Coast services immediately before your booked train, or one of the two immediately after.

If you no longer wish to travel because your train is delayed or cancelled, you can request a full refund from where you bought your ticket.

Travelling from Glasgow to London:

The Glasgow - London service will start from Edinburgh. Boarding in Edinburgh will begin at 22:30, and you will travel in your booked accommodation as planned. The train will depart Edinburgh at 23:40.

To assist you in reaching Edinburgh, your ticket will be accepted at no extra cost on ScotRail services as follows:

  • 21:15 Glasgow Queen Street to Edinburgh (arrives 22:06)
  • 21:45 Glasgow Queen Street to Edinburgh (arrives 22:34)
  • 22:15 Glasgow Queen Street to Edinburgh (arrives 23:06)

Travelling from London to Glasgow:

The London - Glasgow service will terminate at Edinburgh. Boarding and departure times are unaffected, and you may remain onboard in Edinburgh until 08:00.

To assist you in reaching Glasgow, your ticket will be accepted at no extra cost on ScotRail services as follows:

  • 07:30 Edinburgh to Glasgow Queen Street (arrives 08:22)
  • 07:45 Edinburgh to Glasgow Queen Street (arrives 08:39)
  • 08:00 Edinburgh to Glasgow Queen Street (arrives 08:53)
  • 08:15 Edinburgh to Glasgow Queen Street (arrives 09:08)
  • 08:30 Edinburgh to Glasgow Queen Street (arrives 09:16)

CrossCountry customer advice:

Your ticket can be used at no extra cost on the following services:

  • The two CrossCountry services operating before and after your cancelled service
  • ScotRail services between Edinburgh and Glasgow Queen Street
  • ScotRail services between Argyle Street and Motherwell

If you decide to travel from a different station due to this disruption and need to return to that station later, you will also be able to use your existing ticket to do this at no extra cost

Seat reservations will not be carried over to another train, but Coach B, H and L are unreserved coaches on CrossCountry services (where available) so please head to them.

ScotRail customer advice:

The following services will be suspended in both directions:

  • Edinburgh to Glasgow via Shotts / Carstairs
  • Glasgow Central circular services
  • Glasgow Central to Paisley Canal
  • Glasgow Central to Newton
  • Glasgow Central to Barrhead
  • Glasgow Central to Neilston
  • Glasgow Central to East Kilbride
  • Glasgow Central to Ardrossan South Beach / Ardrossan Harbour

The following service alterations are in place:

  • Glasgow Central to Gourock services will be reduced to one train per hour in each direction and revised to start / terminate from Paisley Gilmour Street
  • Glasgow Central to Wemyss Bay services will be reduced to one train per hour each direction and will only run between Paisley Gilmour Street and Wemyss Bay in both directions and also express between Port Glasgow and Paisley
  • Glasgow Central to Largs services will be revised to start / terminate from Kilwinning
  • Glasgow Central to Lanark services will be revised to start / terminate from Motherwell
  • Glasgow Central to Kilmarnock services will be revised to start / terminate from Barrhead
  • One train per hour will operate between Glasgow Central and Ayr and will be revised to start / terminate from Paisley Gilmour Street
  • Glasgow Central to Dumfries / Carlisle will be revised to start / terminate from Kilmarnock
  • Glasgow Central to Stranraer services will be revised to start / terminate from Kilmarnock
  • Glasgow Central low level services will be revised to not call at Glasgow Central

You can use your ticket, at no additional cost, on ScotRail services via any alternative route to your destination.

Your ticket will also be accepted at no extra cost on the following services at no extra cost:

For services that run through the low level you should use Argyle Street. Argyle Street is a short distance (approximate 5 minutes) from Glasgow Central.

Additionally, you can change at Partick and travel to Glasgow Queen Street low level from there. Glasgow Queen Street is a short distance from Glasgow Central.

Very limited replacement transport is in place on the following routes in both directions:

  • Between Glasgow Central and Paisley Gilmour Street
  • Between Glasgow Central and Barrhead

Customers should check for information on services operating in and around the city before travelling and ensure they can complete their entire journey during this disruption.

If you have had to drive to another station your ticket will be valid to collect your car on your return journey. Speak to a member of staff to validate your ticket.

For Neilston you may use your ticket, at no extra coat on Stagecoach Buses route 4 and McGills Buses route 3.

TransPennine Express customer advice:

Services will not operate between Glasgow Central and Liverpool Lime Street / Manchester Airport today and on Tuesday 10 March. As a result, you are advised not to travel. There are no trains or rail replacement buses running between locations.

Due to train crew displacement, services between Edinburgh and Newcastle / Manchester Airport will be subject to delays and cancellations in both directions.

You are advised to check before you travel today and tomorrow, Tuesday 10 March, on the above routes.

You can use your ticket at no extra cost on the following services:

  • Avanti West Coast between Edinburgh and Preston
  • Northern between Preston and Liverpool Lime Street / Manchester Airport
  • ScotRail services between Edinburgh and Glasgow Queen Street
  • TransPennine Express services between Edinburgh and Preston / Manchester Airport

Glasgow Queen Street is a short distance (approximately 5 minutes) from Glasgow Central.

If you have purchased a ticket and your journey has been affected by this disruption, you can use your ticket dated Monday 9 and Tuesday 10 March to travel on Wednesday 11 and Thursday 12 March at no extra cost. Alternatively, if the train you intended to travel on is cancelled or you are unable to complete your journey then you can apply for a refund from your point of purchase.
